About Finale Ligure - Back Country Tour in Finale Ligure

Operating Period 2020 - September 6 - October 18

Osteria del Cantoniere has been a highlight of every single week we've spent in Finale Ligure, clients love the stunning views, relaxed atmosphere, Italian people, lovingly renovated buildings and above all the amazing food. Cooked by local legend Maurizio, he and Alessandro Merlini, the owner of the property have long been friends, serving and hosting everyone from mountain biking tourists to locals, everyone ready to make the journey to the Osteria.

We are stoked to offer this experience to our clients with a bespoke tour. This Finale Ligure Tour is all about exploration off the beaten track. We've teamed up with Alessandro and Back Country Finale to bring you closer to the mountains, away from the hustle and bustle and into the resting calm of the Ligurian Alps.

The accommodation is located in Melogno, around a 40 minute drive from Finale Ligure, beyond the trails of Din and just before the hillside facing Finale Ligure drops down onto the other side and to the towns of Mallare and Calizzano.

The Bed & breakfast is cosy, while it may not be palatial inside it does offer the worlds biggest front garden! It's a true mountain experience. The first room contains 4 bunks and is the principle sleeping quarters. The second room works as a studio, with two beds. There are two bathrooms, washing facilities, full wifi and the on a sunny morning or afternoon the best view to the Mediterranean sea one could ask for. There is also a small kitchen in the studio, though you won't need to use it as this package is fully catered by Osteria del Cantoniere. You'll get breakfast and dinner every day and night, aswell as lunches provided by the best local eateries, all in. The only day you'll need to look after your food is the down day, where you can be shuttled down to Finale Ligure to get some time at the beach!

The Program

What is the trip in a nutshell?

Based on 7 nights arriving Sunday and departing the following Sunday in Rifugio style accommodation in Melogno, in the hills of Finale Ligure. The trip is fully catered including lunch with the exception of one down day. Uplifts and guide are provided for 5 days as are your transfers from and to Nice Airport.

Sunday - Arrival

We will pick you or your group up in Nice airport as close as possible to your landing time, we'll transfer you up to the accommodation where you will have dinner waiting for you if you are landing at 17h or earlier. You'll decompress, build your bikes up and meet your hosts.

Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Friday / Saturday - Shredding!

The program is not fixed, it hinges on what can be ridden on any given day but it will look something like this;

  • Mallare - Flat out natural singletrack. Technical features come at just the right time to give your mind a rest. Mallare is a small rural town located in the hills behind Finale Ligure.
  • Pietra Ligure - Flow, trails that twist and turn through the steeps below Monte Carmo. Technical, fast and immensely rewarding. Read more here.
  • Finale Ligure Back Country - Hitting up some of the infamous Enduro World Series stages away from the beaten track. Hike a bike, epic ridge lines and classic Finale tech await.
  • Bike Park Viola -  Bike Park? Back Country? They don't sound like they go together but with these guys to show you around you'll hit up the best trails in this small town an hours drive from Finale Ligure toward Piedmont.
  • We leave one day in your hands, want to explore more, hit up some Finale Ligure classics, or revisit an area from the week? All is at your fingertips.

Thursday is the down day, which can be shifted if it has to be due to the weather.

Alessandro your host will run you down into Finale Ligure one night of the week (the down day) to get your fix of the big city, he'll also make sure your fridge is stocked with beers and will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. Your guide, Sandra will be on hand to help with anything you'll need on the bike, aswell our core team of MTB Beds legends in resort to call on should you need it.

Sunday - Departure

We will collect you from the accommodation and transfer you down to Nice airport.

Can I change the arrival and departure dates?

The departure and arrival dates can be flexible dependent on a group size of 4 people or more, or subject to an increased charge.

Can I travel to a different airport?

Transfers can be arranged from Genoa airport subject to availability.

What is the cost without transfers as i want to make my own way to Finale Ligure?

If transfers are not required the total cost of the trip is reduced by £45 per person.

What are the options at dinner?

It will be a set menu each evening with amazing locally sourced food. There will be one steak night!

I have a dietary requirement or choice?

Vegetarians or pescetarians are no problem, though please advise us on booking. Please contact us before booking if you are a vegan or have a medical dietary necessity to ensure your needs can be met.

Can I stay for less time?

Yes, please inquire with [email protected] and we can discuss the price for a shorter trip.

Is there anything like a bar, shop or bike shop where the accommodation is?

No, and that's kind of the point! You can stop to get supplies during the riding day and bring them with you on the jeep, your hosts are friendly and will do everything they can to get you what you need.

How many trails will we ride each day?

Depending on the length of the trails and long it takes to get to them between 5 and 10 roughly.

How hard are the trails we will be riding?

There are no easy trails in Finale Ligure, they all present their challanges but they are all amazingly fun. If you are comfortable riding technical red runs in your local bike park you should be ok. Read more in our Ability Assessor.

Is there any pushing or pedalling?

Yes, but not too much. Around 250m vertical each day maximum. Some days will be less.

Recommended bike?

We would recommend an aggressive enduro bike for Finale Ligure. It should be well maintained and modern so that parts can be sourced if they break. We suggest a minimum 0f 150mm/140mm travel and DH casing tyres setup tubeless.

You should bring a full face helmet, hydration pack and all the protective equipment you would feel comfortable wearing.

Can I hire a bike?

Yes there is an option to rent directly from us a Transition Patrol or Sentinel, or other hire bike options in the town of Finale Ligure. Check out the links here.

How far away is Finale Ligure?

It's around 30 minutes by car to Finale Ligure.

What is the average cost of a beer? An evening out?

A pint of Italian pilsner will set you back between €4.50 and €6 depending on where and when you buy it. Dinner in a decent restaurant will cost you around €8 - €20 per main course.

Will i need insurance?

Absolutely. With the UK's departure from the EU your EH111 card no longer covers medical care. You'll also want insurance against other circumstances such as bike theft, damage or cancellation for personal reasons. We recommend Yellow Jersey. Booking with us gets you a discount code for a 10% off.

Why book Osteria del Cantoniere and the Back Country Tour?

This trip is suited to a small group of friends that have seen or aren't about the hustle and bustle of Finale Ligure's town. You want to be out there, experience being up the hills, eating great food, drinking good wine and settling into the peace that comes with staying up amongst the mountains.

You'll be riding for the most part outside of Finale Ligure, so this is best suited to those who desperately want to ride where others haven't, or just want to experience more from this Ligurian mountain bike paradise.

So assemble your crew and get yourselves lost in the Finale Ligure back country!

Aosta, the focal point of the vast, stunning mountain scape that makes up the Aosta Valley. It's not only a beautiful landscape, it's a stunning city filled with culture, great food, good people, cool bars, Roman ruins and the hustle and bustle of a cosmopolitan city.

It's a large city that's geographically quite spread out, with several different lieu-dits or suburbs. But the actual town centre itself is small, walked in under 15 minutes and all sprawling off the same cobbled streets that was the centre of this Roman gateway town centuries ago.
